Seiko 6139-6002 Chronograph - A True Classic

Its always a pleasure to service a Seiko and this month was made extra special by servicing not one but two Seiko chronographs ( one being my own ). This watch came in for a long overdue service, being a watch thats been handed down the family line the owner wanted it running back in tip top condition.

The watch was running but the chronograph could not be stopped or reset, the date function had also completely ceased and timing was sketchy at best. The most common problems with this watch are often the most dreaded but fortunately the chronograph wheel was not in bad shape and the original winding gear for the inner bezel was still present and rust free.

Stuck in the mud...

Due to the holow design of the pushers, years of gunk and sweat can build up inside and wreak all sorts of havoc with the chronograph mechanism. The combiniation of moist sweat, dirt, and body heat can casue the springs inside to rust and become rotted in, cleaning them is usually straight forward but on this occasion the spring is truly rusted in. With patient scratching away at the rust i manage to free the damaged spring and the case can be cleaned up. Its surprising sometimes just how much can get stuck in them pushers  ;(
The pushers now removed the casing parts are stored separately away from movement for their own cleaning, i clean casings with a different machine to prevent contamination of the movement. The front end is built up of several parts including bezel, glass, rubber gasket, inner bezel, bezel spring.

Movement Strip Down - Seiko 6139B 17 Jewel

Below are the pictures ( may not be in order ) of the movement strip down. Fortunately the chronograph wheel was in good order and an expensive replacement would not have to be found, however other parts had started to suffer and they would have to be replaced.

Movement Assembly & Adjustment

With the movement clean and damaged parts swapped for new it was time to rebuild and adjust as required. >>

Timing looking much better and with only a few adjustments she was purring away happily. Its important to note that setting the correct lift angle on the timegrapher is key to getting correct information on the watches condition ( Seiko 6139B / has a 54.5 Degree Lift Angle ). Unlike Swiss movements Seikos run slightly different and a amplitude of 180+ is considered healthy, this movement running at 222 on a half wind is more than enough for me.

Casing & Bracelet

With the movement running well it was time to turn my attention to cleaning up the casing and bracelet. The satin finish had taken a few knocks so a brief touch up and thorough clean should go a long way, along the way a little polish to finish the job. >>

Finished Watch

Finishing a Seiko is always very satisfying and this one has been both a pain and pleasure to restore to good order. The reset is not always dead on but the watch now runs well, day & date set correctly, and importantly the chronograph can be started , stopped , and reset  ( albeit not dead on every time due to minor wear ). With watches of this age it is expected to have some flaws, without them they kinda loose some of their charm and character, luckily this has plenty >>

I have a 6139-6005 that I purchased in 1976. The bezel has scratches and the pushers are not aligned with the case. Could you provide an estimate? Thanks

I have a Seiko 6139-6002 that I have owned since the 1970''s. in that time I has only been serviced once ,about twenty years ago.

The crown and spindle are replacements, the inner bezel no longer rotates, due I'mm told that the incorrect spindle that has been fitted. there has also been a repair to the bracelet.
Butt still keeps pretty good time. I feel know a service is long overdue, could you please give me a idea as to the cost,

Many thanks Jack Truscott

Hi, please could you give me an estimated cost for a Seiko Pogue service and possible restoration. I have just bought one from eBay which looks to be all original but there is some corrosion/damage to the upper right corner of the dial and the time only runs when the chrono is running. Although I have heard that with these watches you should leave the chrono running all the time anyway as it lessens the wear on the clutch?

Any costings/advice would be much appreciated. It looks like it will be a very nice example of a true Pogue with a bit of work!

Kind regards,

Ben

Hi mike,

I’ve got a few pogues coming in and one of them has chrono problems. I’m hoping it’s just pushers (dirt, bad seals etc) this I can do. With that said I can fix any internal movement bits.

Please can I have a cost breakdown
1) full service and restoration
2) fixing the chronograph section
3) crown replacement

Thanks in advance
Brandon

Hi, I am considering the purchase of a Seiko 6139-6012 but the chronograph function does not work at all. It could probably do with a service also. Please could you give me a cost or budget to address this? Many thanks, Richard Booth

Hi Richard,

If the watch you are looking at does not have a chronograph that works at all then id advise not to purchase as it would likely only be good for spares. The chrono wheels for these watches are non existent so if that part is broken then it is costly or impossible to fix. Should you purchase one and it needs servicing then please contact me via email as i do not provide quotes over comments.

Mike

I have owned my Seiko Chronograph since 1975.(I saved up for it as a treat for getting into the Fire Brigade).
I can adjust the hour arm but not the minutes.
I would like it restored to it's former glory which would require a
service new glass and the body to be polished or buffed up.
I wondered could you give me a ballpark figure.
Thank you in anticipation S.T.

Hello, I don't know if you recieved my earlier e-mail. In short, I have owned a Sieko Chronagraph (Pogue) since 1975.
It could do with a new glass and the winder for the time adjustment slips.
I would love for it to be serviced and polished to look as good as it can as I feel I should wear it. If the watch could talk it would have some great stories to tell.
